George Arthur French
Major General Sir George Arthur French, (19 June 1841 – 7 July 1921) was a British Army officer who served as the first Commissioner of the North-West Mounted Police, from October 1873 to July 1876, and as Commandant of the colonial military forces in Queensland (1883–91) and New South Wales (1896–1902) George Arthur French was born at Roscommon, Ireland. He was educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and commissioned in the Royal Artillery in 1860. In 1871, at the request of the Canadian government, he was sent to Canada as a military inspector, eventually becoming head of the School of Gunnery at Kingston, Ontario. French was appointed to organise the North-West Mounted Police on its creation in 1873, and the next year he led the force on its famous march to the foothills of the Rockies. George Noah French (10 November 1926 – 19 July 2012) was an English footballer who played as a full-back in the Football League for Colchester United. Career Born in Colchester, French joined Colchester United in 1952 from amateur forms, making his debut for the club in a Third Division South 1–1 draw with Gillingham on 4 October at Layer Road Layer Road was a Football League stadium in Colchester, England. It was only used for football matches and was the home ground of Colchester United before being replaced by the Colchester Community Stadium. The stadium held spectators and was .... He made two further appearances for Colchester, with his final game coming on 19 September 1953, a 3–0 away defeat to Swindon Town. George French (judge)
George French (1817–1881) was a British judge. He was the Chief Justice of both the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone and the British Supreme Court for China and Japan. Early life French was born in 1817, in Tortola, the West Indies, His father, Mark Dyer French, was a barrister in the West Indies who had also served at one time as Registrar of the Court of Common Pleas of the British Virgin Islands. French went to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he obtained a B.A (jun. op.) in 1839 and an MA in 1842. His father died while he was at university and left him the relatively large sum for the time of £5,000. Career French was called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1844. As a barrister, French "did not have a large business in court." But he was well known in the courts as a law reporter for ''The Times'' and the ''Law Journal'' in the court of the Vice Chancellor. George Russell French
George Russell French (1803–1881), antiquary, was born in London in 1803. After being privately educated he became an architect, and was for many years surveyor and architect to the Ironmongers' Company. French was an accomplished scholar, and devoted his leisure to antiquarian researches. He was long an active member of the council, and subsequently one of the vice-presidents, of the London and Middlesex Archæological Society. In 1841 French published an elaborate account of the ancestries of Queen Victoria and of the Prince Consort; and in 1847 his ''Address delivered on the sixth anniversary of the College of the Freemasons of the Church''. He next traced the royal descent of Nelson and Wellington from Edward I, king of England, and published in 1853 the tables of pedigree and genealogical memoirs in connection therewith.
